DESSERTO
Driving the world's transition to sustainability through cactus-based innovations. We develop high quality bio-materials with our patented technology for you to create durable products.
In the heart of Mexico, Adrián López Velarde and Marte Cázarez embarked on a revolutionary journey to combat the environmental toll of traditional leather. Picture this: a dusty workshop filled with the vibrant green hue of cactus, where two visionaries dared to dream of a world where fashion wasn’t just about style but also about sustainability.
Their brainchild, Desserto®, emerged from two years of relentless research and development, culminating in a groundbreaking vegan bio-material showcased in the fashion capital of Milan in October 2019. But this was more than just an alternative to animal leather; it was a rebellion against environmental degradation. Imagine the excitement as they unveiled their creation, a cactus-based marvel that not only rivalled traditional leather but surpassed it in sustainability, performance, and aesthetics.
Cactus, a miracle of nature
Nowadays climate change is one of the biggest challenges that humanity has to face, in the future prolonged droughts and desertification are the subjects – among others-, that will address several countries, specifically Africa and Asia, where farmers and small producers of low income will become seriously affected. If people want to survive on these harsh conditions, their crops must need to tolerate drought, high temperatures and poor soils.
Innovation developed in a responsible way
Nestled in the heart of Mexico, specifically in the state of Zacatecas, we operate a ranch where we cultivate our raw material – the cactus. Our cultivation methods are rooted in responsibility and sustainability

“Being conscious of the negative impact that the industries are causing to the environment by using animal and faux leather, the lack of sustainable material alternatives available to satisfy an ever-growing industrial demand, we created Desserto® — a sustainable cactus-based biomaterial often distinguished by its great softness at touch and performance for a wide variety of applications while complying with the most rigorous quality and environmental standards of the industry.”
